Britney Spears is coming back to the big screen—but not how you might expect.

The singer’s 2023 memoir, The Woman In Me, is being turned into a film, The Hollywood Reporter and Spears herself have confirmed, with Universal Pictures having acquired the rights.

The star initially teased the news on X, writing: “Excited to share with my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies … stay tuned”.

Marc is the acclaimed producer behind iconic films like Legally Blonde, as well as the upcoming Wicked movies. On the latter, he worked alongside director Jon M. Chu, who is also on board for the Britney project.

Britney’s memoir sure made a splash when it debuted in October 2023. The story of her life sold over 2.5 copies in the United States alone and went on to become a New York Times bestseller.

It also generated plenty of news headlines, with the pop princess opening up about the pitfalls of finding fame at a young age, her complex family dynamics and her years-long conservatorship, which was terminated in 2021. The book also included several revelations about Britney’s relationship with fellow musician, Justin Timberlake.

Notably, Britney revealed she had an abortion while she the pair were together. After reports emerged that Justin was “seething” about the text, Britney seemingly apologised on Instagram. While she didn’t mention her ex by name, she wrote: “My book’s purpose was not to offend anyone by any means! That was me then … that is in the past!”

It has not been confirmed exactly which anecdotes from the memoir will be included in the biopic.
